Grammie is a survivor!

Race for the Cure 2009

Maddie: "Look, my Grammie is a survivor!"

Race for the Cure 2009 was a success. It was surreal to see Kari's Dream Team members walking the race to support my Mom. I can't thank everyone enough for lifting my Mom up in support as she faces a double mastectomy on May 27th. Seeing all her friends and family together is what will help her fight this battle! All prayer warriors out their keep her in your thoughts these next several weeks.

Race For The Cure 2009

(Brief post to provide an update...more to follow)

Race for the Cure 2009 was a blast! Kari's Dream Team had over 60 members, of which many are pictured above (click on it to see the large version). More pictures will be posted in the next couple of days.

When I have some time to debrief, I will post additional pictures and some reflection on the race and its process. Overall, it was an amazing experience.

STILL hunting for that elusive egg...

The Naslunds aren't known for being punctual; however, we like to cut it close...very close! Some friends were in town for Easter, so we decided to take the kids down to Riverfront Park egg hunt (along with the rest of Spokane). The hunt was slated to start at noon, so we met along the way and arrived downtown at 11:59. The guys dropped off the girls and the babies. As we neared the 0-2 year old area of the hunt, I froze with laughter. A dad was yanking his 6 month old into the middle of the patch only to grab an unknown DVD with an egg taped to it. The hunt lasted 30 seconds. Maddie's 1st hunt. She didn't get a SINGLE egg! Before you feel too bad for her, take a look at the following pictures. We had an action packed weekend, which focused on the real reason for our celebrations, Christ's resurrection from the tomb, opening the gates of heaven for you and me.

We went to a great Good Friday Service which completed a great Lent season. We love going to the Wednesday soup suppers during Lent. Fellow Lutherans provide great company. Following the dramatic crucifixion of Christ, we celebrated Miriam's (whom my mom hosts from Kenya during her studies at Whitworth. More on that later) birthday at the Onion. Miriam was a great sport and did the flamingo, which is when the birthday guy/girl puts the birthday hat on their nose and makes a bird noise. Maddie also had her first french fry, which was a riot. She welled up in tears after we had to take away the mushy mess of chewed up fry. We might post pics at some point; however, we will have to wait until Grammie gets her film developed. Yes, you read that correctly:) Gotta love Grammie.

Saturday brought us the drama of the egg hunt downtown and a great ride on the Loofe Carousel, which has been in Spokane since 1909. Jeff spotted the giraffe and said, "Maddie needs to ride on the giraffe, because she is one." Poor girl...she can't get away from giraffes. Good thing they are cute! After the fun ride, we went to Maddie's friend Nicholas' new house to help them move in.

Today, we went to church for Easter Breakfast, then attended a great service. After service we had our own egg hunt. In this one, Maddie, Claire, and Auntie Anna all got eggs...don't worry, we didn't go completely P.C., because we all love to compete. We did all get eggs, though:) We took a very necessary nap after the hunt, then back to Grammie's for an amazing ham dinner.

With no eggs to eat in the basket, Maddie went after the fake grass...just long enough for the picture:)

The 2nd time around the carousel, Maddie started spitting and making noises. She had a blast.

He is risen!

Maddie's best friend at church Annika. She loves to hold Maddie. She loves her so much, she even named a doll Maddie and bought her a really cute outfit...for no special occasion. Yes, a great future babysitter.

How about them apples eggs?

Bob Hess senior photo head tilt...classic.

That elusive egg.

Maddie's cute cousin Claire. She just started walking...how cute is this pic?

Dental Care...

With the arrival of Madison's first teeth, we have been trying to take every precaution with dental care (she's a first-born, what do you expect?). We are really hoping that God blessed her with Jeff's teeth, as he never had braces and didn't have any cavities until he conveniently failed to go to the dentist for two years during college. I have had two sets of braces and enough cavities to make some sort of really neat sculpture out of the amalgam. Actually, that is a funny story in itself. Growing up, I was always given the amalgam that has mercury in it. A few years ago, my dentist told me I should switch them out. So I have had many cavities not once, but twice!

Madison takes fluoride drops once a day and just started (earlier today) chewing on her toothbrush brushing her teeth.

Here's to healthy teeth!

PS. I really wish Spokane wasn't so opposed to fluoride in the water!

Teeth and Daddy Dogcatcher...

It has been a good couple of weeks since I last blogged. We have been busy with baseball (the ones that have been played amidst the rain, snow, sleet, and hail), Lenten soup supper Wednesdays (as an elderly woman in our congregation said last week, "A requirement of being a Lutheran is the ability to make a good soup/potluck item."), Late Winter Spring Break (for Jeff), work, etc....

We have been getting ready for Easter...well, really, I am not sure what we have done to get ready, but I have been craving chips since Ash Wednesday. I will be downing an entire bag of Sour Cream and Cheddar Ruffles to celebrate our Risen King! Lent is supposed to be a sacrifice...it has. This sounds kind of trivial, but to steal the line from Faith Hill, "I need [chips] like the needle needs a vein." We still haven't found Maddie an Easter dress. Jeff says it must include a cute little hat:)

Race for the cure is coming up on April 19th. We have around 50 people registered. What a statement of support for my mom! If you have any questions about the race, please email me or leave a comment. Also, I am not sure if you read any of the blogs I read, but Stellan is not doing very well. Check out MckMamma's blog in my blog list. She can use any prayer time you can give.

The pictures below will explain the story of Daddy Dogcatcher better than I can tell it; however, first, take a look at the first picture. It shows Maddie's two teeth that just came through all of the way. She loves to feel them and chew anything in sight. She got a hold of my finger the other day and it hurt! Maddie loves sitting up and playing with her stacker rings and stuffed giraffe. Check out those pearly whites!

Like I said above, she puts anything and everything in her mouth. In this case, her giraffe is getting the abuse.

She calls out "doggie (more or less in baby scream language)" and Nils reluctantly meanders over.

"Hey Nils," she says (again, more or less). "Run around with my giraffe. I want to watch dad chase you around and yell at you. I will laugh my cute little booty off."

Nils has the giraffe and plays a little tug-o-war.

Nils reports back to Maddie. He gets a little pet on the head. "You sure are a good brother Nils. Now get out of here, because you are going to shed on my blanket. You know what that means...Mom will be on it with the vacuum in no time...ahhhhhhh!"

"Hey! I said BEAT IT! You are an annoying brother. MOMMMMMM!"

The saga will continue...
